The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at Summa Western Reserve Hospital will provide the necessary education and training for the osteopathic physician who desires to prepare for a practice in orthopedic surgery. The program will be a minimum of four years with three years exclusively in orthopedic surgery. The other one year requirement may be met by either an additional year of orthopedic surgery or one year in general surgery. Time spent in other residency programs will be accepted on an individual basis. This program will provide the basic requirements toward eventual certification in orthopedic surgery by the American Osteopathic Association through the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery. This program will be progressive, and when completed, will allow the resident to be well qualified to provide specialized orthopedic care for patients.
The resident will spend his/her full time in orthopedic surgery, except for assignments to other departments. These assignments will be made at the discretion of the Program Director of the Department of Orthopedics. The resident will also participate in hospital clinics.
The orthopedic resident will participate in pre- and post-operative care of all orthopedic patients on a particular orthopedic service to which he/she is assigned, and the resident will assist in the instruction of interns and externs on the orthopedic service.
The orthopedic resident will spend sufficient time in the Department of Radiology reviewing orthopedic films with the radiologist and orthopedic surgeon in order to obtain the expertise that is needed for orthopedic surgery. The orthopedic resident will also attend all autopsies on orthopedic cases and as many other postmortem examinations as possible. In addition, the resident will be responsible for newborn orthopedic examinations, and will review newborns for current evaluation prior to discharge.
NOTE: Information concerning specific clinical and didactic elements and any additional requirements is available through the Summa Western Reserve Hospital Department of Medical Education. Program modifications may be made as needs warrant.
