Emergency Medicine is a relatively new specialty recognized by the American Medical Society. Summa Western Reserve Hospital offers one of 17 residency programs offered nationwide by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine Physicians.
Following a one-year required general rotating internship, the residency is a three-year program. The residency program builds upon the knowledge and clinical skills gained during internship and focuses on expanding and refining the knowledge and skills required for quality emergency care.
The program is designed to provide a balance between clinical and didactic education. To afford them the best education possible, residents will rotate through various sub-specialty areas and emergency departments both at Summa Western Reserve Hospital and surrounding area hospitals. While the residents are assigned to various clinical areas throughout the three years, the thread of the didactic curriculum will run concurrently by means of mandatory weekly seminars and discussions.
During their clinical rotations, residents are closely supervised by the Program Director. At the completion of the residency program, the residents will receive a certificate of completion and will be qualified and eligible for certification by the American Osteopathic Association.
